Reader’s Advisory on Twitter

My reader’s advisory plan will use my Annotated List topic of mental health for teens through Twitter. The plan will take place during the month of May because it is Mental Health Month.

Week 1: May 1-6

  • First Tweet: May is Mental Health Month. Get more information on library resources here http://tinyurl.com/gnyjgd3
  • Tweet out brief stats, links to websites and general mental health books in library catalog.
  • Midweek: introduce Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Recommend OCD books, both fiction and non-fiction. Provide links to the books in the library catalog
  • Send several follow-up tweets encouraging teens to discuss the books and give their opinions on them. Create hashtags for the “book reviews” and also for the different mental illness topics.
  • Ask teens to give their recommendations on books that aren’t listed.

Week 2 May 2-13

  • Introduce Bipolar Disorder. List brief overview of it, stats. Recommend Bipolar Disorder books, both fiction and non-fiction. Provide links to the books in the library catalog.
  • Midweek: introduce Depression. List brief overview of it, stats. Recommend fiction and non-fiction books on Depression and provide links to the books in the library catalog.
  • Send several follow-up tweets encouraging teens to discuss the books and give their opinions on them, as well as suggestions for other books and resources that they find helpful. Create specific hashtags so the conversations can be easily followed.

Week 3: May 14-20

  • Introduce Anxiety and Social Anxiety disorders. List brief overview of it, stats. Recommend fiction and non-fiction books on Anxiety and Social Anxiety and provide links to the books in the library catalog.
  • Midweek: Introduce Self-Mutilation/Cutting. List brief overview of it, stats. Recommend fiction and non-fiction books on it and provide links to the books in the library catalog.
  • Ask teens for reviews on the books and other recommendations. Set up hashtags to follow the conversations.

Week 4: May 21-27

  • Introduce Eating Disorders. List brief overview of it, stats. Recommend fiction and non-fiction books on it and provide links to the books in the library catalog.
  • Midweek: Introduce Schizophrenia. List brief overview of it, stats. Recommend fiction and non-fiction books on it and provide links to the books in the library catalog.
  • Encourage teens to discuss the books and give their opinions on them, as well as suggestions for other books and resources that they find helpful. Create specific hashtags so the conversations can be easily followed.

Week 5: May 28-31

  • Recap the month’s topics, make sure to include resources in it where teens can find help.
  • Ask users for feedback on what they thought about the RA advisory and how it can be improved.
